From Latin cent, "one hundred"

Noun

century (centuries)

  1. A period of 100 years. Often specifically a numbered period with conventional start and end dates, e.g. the twentieth century, which stretches from (strictly) 1901 to 2000, or (informally) 1900 to 1999. The first century AD was from 1 to 100.
  2. A unit of the ancient Roman army with 60 to 80 soldiers, commanded by a centurion.
  3. A political division of ancient Rome, meeting in the Centuriate Assembly
  4. (cricket) 100 runs batted in by one player.
  5. (cycling, US) A ride 100 miles in length.
