• July 31 - German meteorologists Berson and Süring climb to 10,800 m in a free balloon.

August

• August 18 - Gustave Whitehead claimed to have flown his heavier-than-air aircraft (Whitehead Aeroplane No. 21) at Bridgeport, Connecticut. The flight is said to have covered 2.5km and to have involved steering the craft to avoid trees.

October

• 19 October - Albert Santos-Dumont flies his Dirigible No. 6 around the Eiffel Tower to collect a FF100,000 prize.
• 29 October - the Aero Club of Great Britain is established.
• Wilhelm Kress trials a triplane seaplane that makes a short hop before capsizing.
