In the Atlantic Ocean, off the south coast of Newfoundland, a seaquake of Richter 7.2 occures. The quake is centered on the edge of the Grand Banks, about 250 km south of the island..
The quake is felt as far away as New York.
The quake also snapped 12 submarine transatlantic telegraph cables.
It triggers a tsunami that destroys many south coast communities in the Burin Peninsula area, killing 28. 10,000 were left homeless.
The tsunami arrives in three waves, up to seven meters high, about three hours after the quake.
Relief was prevented from reaching the affected areas by a blizzard that struck the day after.
As of 2004, it is the only tsunami to strike Canada's east coast.
