• January 3 - William Joyce, alias Lord Haw Haw, is hanged in Wandsworth Prison for treason.
• January 7 - The Minister for Education, Tomás Ó Deirg, annonces that because refugee children who arrived in Ireland during the war don't have a sufficient knowledge of the Irish language they cannot obtain the Leaving Certificate.
• January 21 - Work starts on a comprehensive Irish-English dictionary.
• February 4 - It is announced that George Bernard Shaw is to be awarded the freedom of Dublin.
• June 17 - Aer Lingus inaugurates a Dublin-Paris air service.
• July 6 - A new republican political party, Clann na Poblachta, is formed in Dublin.
• July 25 - Eamon de Valera's motion to apply for membership of the United Nations is accepted in the Dáil.
• August 6 - It is the first anniversary of the Hiroshima bombing. The co-pilot of the Enola Gay aircraft which dropped the bomb, Captain Bob Lewis, arrives at Shannon Airport completing his first flight as a civil aviation pilot.
• August 28 - An order is signed (http://www.irishstatutebook.ie/ZZSI284Y1946.html) removing Ireland from the state of emergency that existed since 1939 - it will be effective from September 2.
• August 29 - George Bernard Shaw is honoured by being made a freeman of Dublin.
• October 6 - 70 primary schhol teachers protest on the pitch in Croke Park at half-time during the Kerry-Roscommon All-Ireland Football Final due to low pay.
• November 22 - Walt Disney arrives in Dublin. He has a meeting with the Folklore Commission to furthur his investigation of leprachauns for a forthcoming film.
• December 18 - The government announces the release of 24 internees, including Brendan Behan.
