• May 18 - The 21st anniversary of the founding of Fianna Fáil is celebrated in the Capitol Theatre, Dublin.
• July 7 - Aer Lingus begins a new direct service between Dublin and Amsterdam.
• July 31 - The Soviet Union blocks Ireland's entry into the United Nations.
• September 14 - The All-Ireland Football Final is played in the Polo Grounds in New York. Cavan are victorious over Kerry.
