- All CBS soap operas transition from black and white to color broadcasts.
- January 15 - The Rolling Stones appear on The Ed Sullivan Show. At Sullivan's request, the band changed their lyrics from "Let's spend the night together" to "Let's spin some time together".
- February 23 - A taped appearance by The Beatles on the Ed Sullivan show. The band premieres their new music video for the song "Hello Goodbye".
- February 23 - A taped appearance by The Beatles on American Bandstand. The band premieres their new music videos for the songs "Penny Lane" and "Strawberry Fields Forever".
- May 1 - The Overmyer Network starts broadcasts in the United States. The name of the channel is quickly changed to The United Network and quickly fails after a month on the air.
- June 25 - The Our World program airs to over 30 countires and features The Beatles performing "All You Need Is Love", with guests Mick Jagger, Marianne Faithfull, Keith Richards, Keith Moon, Eric Clapton, Pattie Harrison, Jane Asher, Graham Nash, Hunter Davies and others.
- June - BBC2 becomes Europe's first color TV broadcaster. The color service is launched with live coverage from the Wimbledon championships.
- September 4 - The last new episode of the television sitcom Gilligan's Island airs on CBS-TV.
- September 17 - The Doors appear on The Ed Sullivan Show and perform "Light My Fire". Sullivan had requested that the line "Girl we couldn't get much higher" be changed for the show. Jim Morrison performed it the way it was written and The Doors were banned from the show.
- December 26 - The Beatles air the Magical Mystery Tour on British TV.
- PAL and SECAM video standards introduced.
- The Who destroys their instruments during a performance on The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour.
- The FCC orders that cigarette ads on television, radio and in print must include a warning about the health risks of smoking.
- The Corporation for Public Broadcasting is established.
- Color television broadcasts begin in the Philippines, aired on ABS-CBN.
