2NM 981AM is a local radio station in the Upper Hunter Valley of New South Wales, Australia. It is based in Muswellbrook, and serves listeners in Muswellbrook, Singleton, Scone, Aberdeen, Merriwa, Murrurundi and surrounding areas.
It broadcasts on the AM band at 981 kilohertz, with power output of 5 kilowatts (5,000 watts). Up until 1983, the station broadcasted on 1458 kilohertz, but moved to 981 AM to improve the reception in parts of the Valley. The station is owned by Radio Hunter Valley Pty. Ltd., along with sister station Power FM 98.1 FM. Its callsign means 2 (New South Wales prefix for radio stations) Newcastle Muswellbrook.
According to the Australian Broadcasting Authority (http://www.aba.gov.au/), the station commenced operations on the 9th of October 1939, but the station was celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2004. There is some conjecture as to when the station officially started.
The station was once owned by the Catholic Church, who also owned 2SM and Newcastle station 2NX (now NXFM). 2NM relayed 2NX's programming at night in the 1970s, and was often referred as 2NXNM, but usually had 2NX identification during that time.
It was purchased by current owners Grant Broadcasters when the Catholic Church got out of broadcasting in the mid-1990s.
Today, 2NM broadcasts an adult contemporary format, combined with local news and information, and sydndicated programs such as John Laws, 2UE's weeknight programming (namely Stan Zemanek and New Day, Australia with John Kerr) and Ray Hadley's Continous Call Team (relayed from 2GB Sydney).
