2nd Gurkha Rifles - Definition and Overview

The 2nd Gurkha Rifles (The Sirmoor Rifles) was a British Indian Army then British Army regiment.

The changing names of the regiment

• April 24 1815: The Sirmoor Battalion is formed.
• October 29 1861: Renamed 2nd Goorkha Regiment
• March 1891: Renamed 2nd (Prince of Wales's Own) Gurkha (Rifle) Regiment (The Sirmoor Rifles)
• July 1 1994: Amalgamated with 6th Queen Elizabeth's Own Gurkha Rifles, 7th Duke of Edinburgh's Own Gurkha Rifles, and 10th Princess Mary's Own Gurkha Rifles, to form The Royal Gurkha Rifles

History

During the Sepoy Mutiny the regiment defended Hindu Rao's house for over three months, losing 327 out of 490 men.

The 2nd Gurkha Rifles served in Malta during the Russo-Turkish War, 1877-78.

The regiment is part of the Brigade of Gurkhas.
