Corporate logo of 3D Realms
3D Realms is a computer game developer based in Garland, Texas and founded in July of 1994 as a division of Apogee Software. It is now semi-notorious for its upcoming fourth installment in the Duke Nukem series, Duke Nukem Forever, which is currently eight years into development.
Current products
The latest Duke Nukem, Duke Nukem Forever, will be released, according to the company, "when it's done." The 3D Realms development team was apparently understaffed at the beginning but is now picking up speed on the Duke Nukem Forever project.
The current successful title is the Max Payne sequel, Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne, where the original was overseen by 3D Realms.
Cease and Decease against mod development
There have been many cases of 3D Realms sending out "Cease and Decease" letters against mod teams that are attempting to port Duke Nukem 3D into newer engines. The newest of these attempts has been for Half Life 2. In many case, the mod teams choose to do the shareware version, knowing about 3D Realms' letters. However, 3D Realms still sent these letters, even if they build the levels and textures entirely from scratch. Some claimed that because these mods are so good, perhaps even better than Duke Nukem Forever, and will arrive earlier than it, in order not to embarrass themselves 3D Realm opted to shut them down. In many cases, all these actions do is merely strengthen the vaporware legend of Duke Nukem Forever.
