The 3rd US Infantry Regiment is a unit of the United States Army. The regiment bears the nickname The Old Guard, and is the oldest infantry regiment in the army, having been constituted in 1784 as the 1st American Regiment. The regiment currently has two battalions:
- 1st Battalion - The 1st Battalion currently serves as part of the Military District of Washington as part of the defence of the National Capital Region. In this role it takes part in NBC operations, area security and control of civil disturbances. However, the battalion is also designated as the representatives of the entire US Army on major ceremonial occasions - it is Honor Guard to the President, and has reponsibility for guarding the Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington National Cemetery and as the foremost Color Guards in the service.
- 2nd Battalion - The 2nd Battalion currently serves as one of three infantry battalions in the 3rd Brigade Combat Team of the US 2nd Infantry Division.
