480i - Definition and Overview

480i is the shorthand name for a video mode. The i stands for interlaced, the 480 for a vertical resolution of 480 lines, usually with a horizontal resolution of 640 pixels and an aspect ratio of 4:3; that is standard-definition television (SDTV). The field rate (not the frame rate) is usually 60 Hertz and can be given explicitly after the letter (480i60. It is usually used in former NTSC countries (North America, Japan) for NTSC is exactly that resolution, but analogue. It can be transported by both major digital television formats, ATSC and DVB, and on DVD.
