Eight Mile Road separates the city of Detroit, Michigan and its northern suburbs. In an attempt to show that he was serious about Detroit's problems with crime, Former Mayor Coleman A. Young rhetorically told nefarious elements of the city to "hit Eight Mile" during his tenure. The road continues to dileneate between the haves and the have-nots in Detroit as poverty persists within the city limits and the suburbs house some of the most prosperous zip codes in the nation.
The movie 8 Mile, starring Detroit native hip-hop/rap artist Eminem, as well as his song 8 Mile Road, both take their names from this road.
