The AMD K5 was a Pentium-class microprocessor, manufactured by AMD, first introduced in 1995. It superseded the Am5x86, and was followed by the K6. It was comparable to the Cyrix 6x86, as it sported an internal RISC architecture as well. All models had 4.3 million transistors on-chip. No K5 supported MMX instructions.
There were two sets of K5 processors, internally called the "5k86" and the "K5" series, both released with the K5 label. The "5k86" line ran from 75 to 100MHz; the "K5" line ran from 90 to 116MHz. However, AMD used what it called a PR rating, or performance rating, to label the chips according to their equivalence to a Pentium of that clock speed. Thus, a 116MHz chip from the second line was marketed as the "K5 PR166".
The following models were released:
- "5k86"
- K5 PR75 (75MHz), 1995
- K5 PR90 (90MHz), 1995
- K5 PR100 (100MHz), 1996
- "K5"
- K5 PR120 (90MHz), 1996
- K5 PR133 (100MHz), 1996
- K5 PR166 (116MHz), 1997
