The final strip in the original Modest Destiny chapter
A Modest Destiny was a daily pixel art web comic. It was launched in January 1, 2003 and released a strip daily until December 28th in the same year. On March 16, 2004, A Modest Destiny: The Dreaded Vampire Lord Fluffy began, and lasted until later that year.
The comic followed the adventures of a young fellow named Maxim and was technically told in flashbacks; the point of view was in the here and now of the flashback with no narration, however, so the fact that it was a flashback made no influence on most of the comic, save for conclusions one could draw based on things people do and say in the future every once in a while when the narration snipped back to it. The theme/setting of the comic was definitely a fantasy world, but it was dotted with modern mentality and references, from Maxim's weapon of choice doing "1d4 damage" ala Dungeons and Dragons to a dramatic heroic entrance speech being supplemented by Sailor Moon's "I will punish you".
A Modest Destiny first story arc ended together with the year 2003. When it did, Howard gave his audience quite a shock when he announced the site changing the AMD universe for a science fiction space opera by the name of The Starship Destiny, which is completely unrelated to the original AMD. Before the start of TSD, there were a few weeks of filler comics. There were also some filler comics in the middle of TSD and after the conclusion. Not being completely satisfied with the way TSD turned out, the site returned to a new season of AMD.
That storyline took place after the first AMD, but didn't feature Maxim or the flashback narrative. Instead, it followed a bad guy, a vampire named Fluffy who had been tamed by society, and some lesser used characters from the first season. The Fluffy storyline is mostly referred to as AMDF. About halfway through the season, the comic's format changed. While still updated daily with new comic, the story now only runs during the weekdays with one shot gag strips featuring characters from both AMD and TSD on the weekends.
As of September 2004, the AMDF storyline came to conclusion. Howard decided to take a break from the AMD world for a while and make a second attempt at the TSD universe. After that short episode concludes, Howard will return to AMD to complete the trilogy with A Modest Destiny: The War of Fate (AMDW).
