Beginning with the dramatic appearance of a masked aristocrat at Holmes' 221B Baker Street abode, and hanging on a blackmail plot orchestrated by a vivacious opera singer, the story is considered one of the Holmesian Canon's best. It is also notable as the only appearance in the Canon of Irene Adler.
