 Abbey of Bec - Definition

The Abbey of Bec (French: Abbaye Notre-Dame du Bec) in Normandy, France, is a Benedictine foundation. Its full name is the "Abbey of Notre Dame of Bec-Hellouin".

It was founded in 1039 by a monk named Herluin. The abbey is situated in Le Bec-Hellouin, in the Eure département, in a valley, midway between the cities of Rouen and Le Havre.

In mediaeval times Bec also owned and managed St Neots Priory in England as well as being involved with a number of other British foundations. Two Archbishops of Canterbury were monks from Bec.
