Abdel-Aziz al-Hakim - Definition and Overview

Abdul Aziz al-Hakim (b. 1953?) was a member of the U.S.-appointed Iraq Interim Governing Council and served as its president in December 2003. Brother of the Shia leader Mohammed Baqir al-Hakim, he replaced him as leader of the Supreme Council for the Islamic Revolution in Iraq when Mohammed Baqir was assassinated in August 2003 in Najaf.

Hakim is the first candidate listed on the United Iraqi Coalition, the slate that consolidates electoral hopes for the country's Shiite majority for the Jan. 30 election. He has headed the Supreme Council for the Islamic Revolution in Iraq since his older brother, Ayatollah Mohammed Bakir Hakim, was killed by a car bomb in August 2003.
