An abstract noun is a noun that refers to an idea, emotion, feeling, or quality that cannot be detected by the five senses (touch, taste, hear, see, smell). Contrast with concrete noun.
Strictly speaking, one should talk about abstract concepts, since other parts of speech can also refer to ideas etc. that cannot be detected directly, for example abstract adjectives.
ex: When Jonathon dove into the river to rescue the drowning child, his incredible bravery amazed the crowd of onlookers standing on the pier.
Are often used to describe characteristics of people, animals, and in analogies and figures of speech.
