In ancient times when it was the deme Acharnae, many of its residents were charcoal peddlers, a fact which is put to comic use by Aristophanes in his play The Acharnians. Today it is a working-class neighborhood. It is located about 10 km due north of Athens. Acharnai has schools, a lyceum, a gymnasium, banks, a post office and squares. On 7 September, 1999, it was very close to the epicenter of a devastating earthquake which resulted in significant destruction to Acharnes and the greater Athens area. Historical population
