Act of War: Direct Action is an upcoming real-time strategy game developed by Eugen Systems and published by Atari. The game is based on the Command & Conquer concept of modern warfare RTS, but, according to the previews, it excels in execution and may challenge EA's C&C series as the best modern RTS.
The game has the best graphics in a real-time strategies to date. It features a rich story written by Dale Brown a retired captain of US Air Forces and a bestselling author.
The story is told by a combination of prerendered cut-scenes and one hour of live action film. The first Command & Conquer games pioneered the use of cinematics in a RTS, although the latest Generals didn't have them. Live action was shot in Montreal, Canada in summer 2004. The prerendered cut-scenes were done using machinima technique, with one person playing the game and another recording the action from different angles (with all interface elements hidden). The recorded video was then postprocessed and provided with sound effects and dialog.
Act of War features many new gameplay elements as well, including wounded soldiers being immobilised until medical help, taking prisoners, realistically destructible buildings, creating barricades and others.
