Actinomycetes are from the class actinobacteria. They are gram positive filamentous bacteria that generally live in soil and break down organic matter such as dead trees and leaves. They produce spores. They produce secondary metabolites that are highly useful pharacutical products. In 1980 70% of naturally occuring antibiotics were derived from actinomycetes.
