Ad filtering - Definition and Overview |
Ad filtering or ad blocking is a service available in some web browsers which allows advertisement pictures, Flash movies, and sometimes even website frames or scripts to be blocked from being run in the browser. The benefit is a cleaner looking webpage free from advertisements. The drawback is the web developers who rely on displayed advertisements to offset the cost of running the website may lose their revenue. This technology currently poses little threat to advertisers as Internet Explorer (unable to block non-popup advertisements) is the most popular browser in use today. However, users of IE can still block advertising through the use of an edited host file.
