Advanced Weather Interactive Processing System - Definition and Overview

AWIPS Equipment

The Advanced Weather Interactive Processing System (AWIPS) is a technologically advanced information processing, display, and telecommunications system that is the cornerstone of the National Weather Service's (NWS) modernization and restructuring. AWIPS is an interactive computer system that integrates all meteorological and hydrological data, and all satellite and radar data and enables the forecaster to prepare and issue more accurate and timely forecasts and warnings. AWIPS has been implemented so the NWS will meet its mission "to provide weather and flood warnings, public forecasts, and advisories for all of the United States, its territories, adjacent water and ocean areas, primarily for the protection of life and property" more efficiently and effectively.
