Aeolian mode - Definition and Overview

The Aeolian mode is a musical mode or diatonic scale. It may be considered a major scale but starting from the sixth scale degree. Some examples are:

  • A Aeolian mode is the C major scale starting on A.
  • B Aeolian mode is the D major scale starting on B.
  • C# Aeolian mode is the E major scale starting on C#.
  • D Aeolian mode is the F major scale starting on D.
  • E Aeolian mode is the G major scale starting on E.
  • F# Aeolian mode is the A major scale starting on F#.
  • G# Aeolian mode is the B major scale starting on G#.

The Aeolian mode's intervallic formula when compared to the major scale consists of flatting the 3rd, 6th, and 7th scale degrees.

A scale in the Aeolian mode is also called a natural minor scale.

modes

Many old church hymns were set in modes, defined by white keys of the church organ (or, in more modern times, the piano or music keyboard input device to computer), over a one octave interval.

In the case of the Aeolian mode this is established by the 8 notes, from the white keys, going from A to A.

Examples of songs in the Aeolian mode

Many popular songs, such as the lulaby, "summertime", from the 1935 Porgy and Bess musical, are in the Aeolian mode.
