Afro-Brazilian (called Santería in Spanish) is a religion practiced in the Americas by descendants of African slaves. It is a mixture of African animism and Catholicism, worshipping santos or saints, both male and female. Santería is a corruption of religions brought to the Americas during the slave trade, which slaves' owners forbade them to practice. Followers of Santería are mainly descended from the nation of Nigeria, especially the Yorba tribe, whose language is commonly spoken among this group.
Santería practices animal sacrifice, making it a frequent target of animal rights organizations such as PETA. The group does not advocate human sacrifice.
