The Age of Aquarius is a time period in astrology.

Earth, in addition to its diurnal rotation upon its axis, has a precessional motion involving a slow periodic shift of the axis itself; approximately one degree every 70 years. This motion, which is caused mostly by the Moon's gravity, gives rise to the precession of the equinoxes in which the Sun's position on the ecliptic at the time of the equinoxes, measured against the background of fixed stars, shifts gradually with time.

In astrology the Solar Age is defined by the constellation in which the Sun appears during the vernal equinox. Since each sign of the zodiac subtends (on average) 30 degrees, each solar age might be thought to last 70 × 30 = 2,100 years. Thus the current solar age (Pisces), which began about 150 BC, would be thought to be due to end some time in the 21st century, and to be replaced by the "New Age" of Aquarius.

However, as Jung pointed out some fifty years ago, Ages are based on real constellations and not 30 degree sections of the zodiac. As Pisces is a long constellation, the transition of the vernal equinox into Aquarius will not take place until about AD 2600.

Astrology associates the Age of Pisces with the yin; i.e., spirituality and intuition. Aquarius, on the other hand represents the yang, with its emphasis on rationality and high-technology. The New Age Movement sees itself as the harbinger of this future change-over of values.

According to the astrological studies of The Rosicrucian Fellowship the beginning of the Age of Pisces took place about AD 500: It was the last time that the vernal equinox occurred in the constellation Aries, and thus during that year the intellectual and natural zodiacs agreed.

The first point of Aries travels backward among the constellations of the zodiac. This point has been traveling backwards at the rate of one degree in about seventy years and at the present time the vernal equinox occurs in about nine degrees of Pisces.

Consequently, it will be only about AD 2600 it actually enters the constellation Aquarius. Although its influences are already being felt (Orb of Influence), the Aquarian Age starts at that time and it will last approximately 2,100 years while the first point of Aries moves backward through the constellation Aquarius.

The reason why some astrologers claim we already are in the Aquarian Age may be explained by the difference between the zodiacal constellations and the "intellectual zodiac".

Popular culture references

In popular culture, the expression "Age of Aquarius" usually refers to the heyday of the hippie and New Age movement of the 1960s and 1970s.

Although more rock than new age in genre, the 1967 successful musical Hair, with its opening song "Aquarius" and the memorable line "This is the dawning of the age of Aquarius", brought the Aquarian Age concept to the attention of a huge worldwide audience.

The Japanese card game and anime series Aquarian Age borrows its name from this, but has no other connections to this or the New Age movement.
