Air Aegean - Definition and Overview

Formed in 1987, Aegean Air was the first privately owned airline with an air operator's certificate in Greece. Its first flights were from Athens to Heraklion and Thessaloniki.

Despite substantial opposition from the public sector, the airline has become one of Europe's most successful regional airlines.

Founder Antonis Simigdalas was elected President of the European Regions Airline Association in 2004 and the airline won ERA's Airline of the Year Gold award in the same year.
