Akkar - Definition and Overview

Akkar is a region in the northern part of Lebanon, characterized by the presence of a relatively large costal plain, with high mountains to the east. In 2003, Akkar was no longer a province, but was declared a Mouhafazah with Halba as its capital. The largest city of Akkar is Bebnin. Akkar has many important Roman and Arabic archeological sites. One of the most famous archeological sites and the birth place of the Emperor Alexander Severus, is the Tell of Arqa near the town of Miniara.
