Al-Walid II - Definition and Overview

Walid ibn Yazid or Walid II (d. April 16, 744) was an Umayyad caliph who ruled from 743 until 744. He succeeded his uncle, Hisham.

Walid's ascension to the throne was heavily opposed by many in the Umayyad court due to Walids reputation for living an immoral lifestyle. Despite this, he was made caliph. He almost immediately began to target those who had opposed him, leading to widespread dislike of Walid which spread to dislike of the Umayyads. Walid would be killed on April 16, 744 while fighting some enemies of his. He was succeeded by his cousin Yazid III.
