Al Columbia is an American comic book artist. As a teenager, Columbia worked as an assistant to Bill Sienkiewicz on Alan Moore's ill-fated Big Numbers, and when Bill withdrew from the series, Moore and his publishers asked Columbia to continue as artist on the series. For reasons that remain unknown, Columbia also withdrew from Big Numbers, and the series remains unfinished to this day.
Columbia's output to date consists of the slim graphic novel, Doghead, published by Tundra, and two issues of The Biologic Show (a title borrowed from William S. Burroughs), in addition to some short pieces in the anthologies Zero Zero and Blab and the writing credits for two issues of The Pogostick (2004, Fantagraphics), illustrated by Ian Persoff.
Although his oeuvre can be measured in a few inches, Columbia's works are characterized by a fierce, unnerving originality. He draws with a unique style, portraying a world of dark macabre inhabited by oblivious cartoony characters.
