Alan Ball (born in 1957) is an Academy Award winning screenwriter best known for writing the screenplay for the film American Beauty. He is also the creator of the HBO television series Six Feet Under, which he produces and occasionally writes and directs as well. He is gay and his work frequently includes gay themes and characters. In addition to being a screen and television writer, he has also directed several episodes of his HBO series, Six Feet Under.
Ball is a graduate of the Florida State University School of Theatre.
In 2004, he aquired the film rights to the Alicia Erian novel Towelhead, which is set to be published in April 2005. He announced that he will write a screenplay and direct the film, which will start production after he wraps up the fifth and final season of Six Feet Under.
