Alan Pardew (born 18 July 1961) is an English professional football manager. The highlight of his playing career came in 1990 when he helped Crystal Palace reach the F.A Cup final, a year after guiding them to promotion to the First Division via the Second Division playoffs. In 1991 he helped them finish third in the league behind champions Arsenal and runners-up Liverpool. He later turned out for Charlton Athletic before retiring as a player in 1997. Alan Pardew was appointed assistant manager of Reading in 1998, working under Tommy Burns. He was promoted to the position of manager when Burns resigned in November 1999, and guided Reading to promotion as Division Two runners-up at the end of the 2001-02 season. The following season they reached the Division One playoffs but lost to Wolves in the semi finals. In October 2003, Alan Pardew left Reading to become manager of West Ham United. That season they reached the Division One playoff final but lost to Crystal Palace, and in the 2004-05 Coca Cola Football League Championship West Ham United are among the favourites to win promotion.
