Alice Hoffman, born March 16 1952 in New York City, is an American author, best known for her novel Practical Magic. She was educated at Adelphi University, and at Stanford University. Her first job was at the Doubleday factory, which is her current publisher. Most of her works contain elements of magic, irony, and non-standard romances and relationships. Slightly feminist, she has often been compared to Maeve Binchy. Hoffman currently lives in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
