Screenshot of Alyx Vance from the computer game Half-Life 2. Alyx Vance is a fictional character in the first-person shooter computer game Half-Life 2 (2004), sequel to Half-Life (1998). Alyx is portrayed as a young, 20-something woman living in City 17, a presumably Eastern European city under the rule of an alien race called the Combine and their Consul Dr. Breen. Alyx's voice is that of actress Merle Dandridge. Her face and body were modeled after Jamil Mullen.
Alyx is the daughter of Dr. Eli Vance, former colleague of Gordon Freeman at the Black Mesa Research Facility. Alyx is also a member of a resistance group and helps Gordon in fighting the Combine.
She helps Freeman frequently, e.g. saving him from Combine soldiers in the first episode Point Insertion, when he is unarmed and not wearing his H.E.V. suit yet; introducing a totally new weapon known as Gravity Gun in Black Mesa East; helping him fight his way through the jail in Entanglement and finally guiding him through the Citadel in the last scenes of Our Benefactors. She wields a gun with great proficiency. She has a pet robot named Dog, approximately 3 meters high, which is very important to the plot, as it opens the long-ago closed way to Ravenholm and (much later) hidden underground passage to Citadel, using its immense physical strength.
In Black Mesa East Alyx is shown constantly arguing with Dr. Judith Mossman. Alyx's dislike of the latter is later obviously proven well-founded, as in Entanglement Freeman and Alyx learn that she has in fact betrayed the resistance and gave away the location of their hidden facility. Nevertheless, in Our Benefactors Dr. Mossman is cleared of accusation (see related article for more detail) and the two women finally make peace.
At the end of Half-Life 2 Alyx is with Gordon Freeman at the time of the dark energy explosion. After the G-Man saves Gordon from the expanding matter explosion, it is unknown whether the G-Man saves Alyx as well.
There are also unfounded rumours that Alyx will be the main protagonist in the next installment of the Half-Life series, due to her enormous popularity amongst gamers.
