Amba-Alagi - Definition and Overview

Amba-Alagi is a remote area in Ethiopia between Asmara and Addis Ababa.

History

The Battle of Amba-Alagi occurred in December 1895. On December 7, the Abyssinians defeated the Italian armies. A day later on December 8, the Ethiopian emperor Menelik II drove the Italian general Baratieri out. The forces included 2,350 men including Pietro Toselli. After the defeat, the Italians withdrew their remnants from Eritrea to Amba Alagi and Gondar.

In April 26, 1941 during World War II, the Italian fortress of Dessie south of the place was captured by South African forces. On May 17, it was captured and besieged by General Cunningham.

A film named La Pattuglia dell'Ambi Alagi was filmed in 1953 by Flavio Calzavara is about a war and defeated the English.
