Americans For Democratic Action (ADA) was formed in January 1947, when Eleanor Roosevelt, John Kenneth Galbraith, Reinhold Niebuhr, Hubert Humphrey and 200 other activists. The made a break with others on the left in that they believed that it was not enough to not a be a Communist; one must be an anti-communist. They regarded defending America from totalitarian foes as a first principle. Saying that iut is better to "light a candle rather than curse the darkness", they constituted an alternative to the anti-communism of Wisconsin Senator Joe McCarthy whom they believed threatened the New Deal.
