 Amitai Etzioni - Definition 

Amitai Etzioni (Born Werner Falk 4 january 1929 in Cologne, Germany) is an American sociologist, famous for his work on communitarianism.

Career

Etzioni studied at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. Etzioni promovated in sociology at the University of California in Berkeley in 1958. He was a professor of sociology at Columbia University for twenty years, until 1978. He taught at the Brookings Institution in 1978 and was a senior advisor to president Jimmy Carter. In 1980 he became a professor at George Washington University. He was originally influenced by Martin Buber.

Etzioni has written 24 books, that are translated to many languages. He wrote his most important book in 1969: Active Society. His last book is called From Empire to Community: A New Approach to International Relations. He also wrote articles for the Washington Post and criticized the Vietnam war.

Etzioni is married and has five sons.
