Anastasio Somoza Portocarrero is the son of former Nicaraguan dictator and President Anastasio Somoza Debayle. During his father's presidency, he commanded a National Guard unit that was accused of widespread human rights violations while fighting the Sandinista guerrillas.
He went into exile to Guatemala in 1979, following the Sandinistas' victory. In 2001, he announced his intentions to return to Nicaragua.
