And All That Could Have Been (also known as halo 17) is a double album / double DVD set by Nine Inch Nails released in 2002.
CD Version
There are two versions of the CD set. There is a limited edition set, packaged in a gray cloth case, that contains both the Live and Still CDs together. Live and Still were also sold separately. Still, however, was only available to order through the Nine Inch Nails official site (http://www.nin.com) (currently unavailable).
Live contains live tracks from the Fragility 2.0 Tour.
Still contains alternate renditions of older NIN songs, as well as new material, all performed on piano, electric piano, and other electroacoustic instruments, and backed by computer-generated synth textures. Also notable is the inclusion of a song entitled "Leaving Hope", which is the publisher name Reznor has copywritten his music under since the beginning of his career. Reznor has stated that he was very depressed during the recording of the album, but due to the melancholy nature of the album, this was suspected by fans for quite some time.
DVD Version
There are also two different versions of the DVD set. One was released with a 5.1 Dolby Digital surround soundtrack and the other was released with a 5.1 DTS surround soundtrack. Other than this, both sets are identical. The set is comprised of video footage from the 2002 Fragility 2.0 Tour. The band filmed the tour themselves using digital cameras and they created the DVD themselves, editing it on an iMac. This video was also released on one VHS tape.
The DVD version has several easter eggs [1] (http://www.dvdtalk.com/eggs/read.php?ID=119)
Message
The DVD edition includes a plastic slip with a small message written by Trent Reznor, it reads (using original formatting (aside from all-caps)):
- just a glimpse
- just a little reminder
- of a time and place we
- used to live in
- this dvd attempts to
- document the
- experience of
- nine inch nails live,
- as we were in the
- summer of 2000
- we filmed and recorded
- most of the dates of
- the north american
- fragility 2.0 tour
- with home video cameras
- then assembled
- mixed and edited this
- ourselves with our
- home computers
- in my eyes
- fragility 2.0
- was a summation of
- what we had
- accomplished up to
- that time so this dvd
- serves as a reminder
- of achievement
- as well as
- a departure point
- this is almost what
- it felt like being there
