Andrei Mureşanu (16 November 1816-12 October 1863) was a Romanian poet and revolutionary of Transylvania.
He was born in Bistriţa in a family of peasants. He studied philosophy and theology in Blaj and starting 1838, he was a professor at Braşov. He published his first poetry in the magazine Foaia pentru Minte, Inima şi Literatură (in English The page for the mind, heart and literature)
He was one of the leaders of the 1848 revolution in Romania, participating in the Braşov delegation in Blaj in May 1848. His poem Deşteaptă-te, române!
became the hymn of the revolutionaries with the music of Anton Pann. Nicolae Bălcescu named it « La Marseillaise of Romanians », mobilizing the people to fight. Nowadays, this poem is the national anthem of Romania.
After the revolution, Mureşanu worked as translator in Sibiu, had some patriotical works published in the "Telegraful Român" magazine. In 1862 his poetry was gathered in a volume. He died due to bad health in Braşov in 1863.
