Andres Bonifacio - Definition and Overview

Andres Bonifacio

Andres Bonifacio (November 30, 1863 - May 10, 1897) was a leader in the revolution of the Philippines against Spanish colonial rule, the first revolution in Asia against European colonial rule. In 1892 he founded the Katipunan revolutionary secret society, which would later become the core of the Philippine Revolutionary Army.

In the Katipunan, he held the title of Supremo, and later on, founded a Revolutionary Government (Pamahalaang Mapamaghimagsik).

As the revolution ended, an election was held in Tejeros, Cavite, in Emilio Aguinaldo's mansion, and whose participants were solely from Cavite. Aguinaldo won as President, and the Supremo fell to the position of 'Director of Interior'. When members of the Magdalo faction tried to discredit Bonifacio as uneducated and unfit for the position, Bonifacio declared the results of the convention as null and void. Bonifacio was later on arrested upon orders of Gen. Aguinaldo for charges of sedition and treason and executed on May 10, 1897 at Mt. Buntis.
