Anianus served as Patriarch of Alexandria from 61 to 82, a position which preceded the Popes of the Coptic Church and Orthodox Church of Alexandria. He was the successor of Mark the Evangelist, and is, in fact, mentioned in the apocryphal Acts of Mark.

His origins are disputed; Mark suggests he was a cobbler, whereas more modern sources suggest he was a noble.

He has received a sainthood - his feast day being April 25; see Calendar of saints.
