Anne (also known as Lily and Chantarelle at various points) was a minor recurring fictional character in the U.S. television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel, played by Julia Lee. Though she was a minor character, she had an extremely long and complicated story which began in the second season of Buffy, and was seen as recently as the final episode of Angel. Anne was a homeless runaway girl who lived on the streets and joined various groups and cults over the years. At one point in her early history, she had joined a cult and called herself "Sister Sunshine." Her first appearance in the Buffyverse was in season two of Buffy, where she called herself "Chantarelle" and was a member of a cult that worshipped vampires as higher beings. After barely escaping from a raid on their hideout by Spike, she fled to Los Angeles and became a street kid. At the beginning of season three, she met a fellow homeless kid named Ricky, who named her "Lily" after a song lyric. By chance, she again met Buffy who had fled to Los Angeles for her own reasons, and recognized her as the girl who had earlier saved her. In order to stay anonymous, Buffy was calling herself by her middle name, Anne. They had a pleasant but awkward conversation (during which Buffy informed her that "Chantarelle" is a type of mushroom.) Later Ricky went missing and Lily asked Buffy for help...which caused both of them to be imprisoned in a demon sweatshop until Buffy convinced Lily that she could escape. After they had liberated the slaves in that dimension, Buffy decided to go back to Sunnydale and left her job and apartment to Lily, who decided to change her name again to Anne. Over the next few years, Anne pulled herself together and actually began running a shelter for homeless kids in Los Angeles. She had met Gunn during his days as a street kid. In season two of Angel, Wolfram and Hart presented itself as a benefactor to the shelter, Angel convinced Anne to expose their plans to pocket a majority of the money raised on behalf of the shelter. Instead, Angel invited an old adversary (who was honorable) to steal the funds and later gave 100% of the money raised to the shelter. She was featured in another episode of season two, and then was not seen again until season five of Angel. During what Gunn assumed would be his last day alive, his choice of activity was to assist Anne at the shelter, which was apparently turning quite successful. Gunn asked Anne what she would do if she knew it was all pointless, and she asserted that she would still do whatever needed to be done to help make the world a better place.
