Anthony Lewis - Definition and Overview

Anthony Lewis (b. March 27, 1927, New York City) is a prominent liberal intellectual, writing for the New York Times op-ed page and the New York Review of Books, among others. He was previously a columnist for the Times and before that he covered the United States Supreme Court (starting in 1955), for which he won a Pulitzer Prize in 1963. Before that he was London bureau chief.

Noam Chomsky notes that Anthony Lewis is at "the far left of the spectrum" that is available in the mainstream media, and thus is useful in discovering the tacit assumptions that underly all mainstream discussion.

He is married to Justice Margaret H. Marshall, Chief Justice of the Supreme Judicial Court of Massachusetts, and formerly General Counsel and Vice-President at Harvard University. She wrote the majority opinion of Goodridge v. Department of Public Health which legalized gay marriage in the state of Massachusetts.
