Arabian Sea - Definition and Overview

The Arabian Sea is the part of the Indian Ocean between the Arabian Peninsula and India.

The maximum width of the Arabian Sea is stipulated to be 2,400 km, and its maximum depth is about 5,000 metres. The Indus River is the only considerable river flowing into this sea.

In the northwest it narrows to form the Gulf of Oman which in turn connects to the Persian Gulf at the Strait of Hormuz.

The countries with coastlines on the Arabian Sea are India, Iran, Oman, Pakistan, Yemen, and United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Cities on the coast include Mumbai (Bombay), (India) and Karachi, (Pakistan).
