Arakan is a state in the North Western part of Myanmar, formerly Burma. Most of the inhabitants of Arakan are ethnically similar to the people of Chittagong area in neighboring Bangladesh. Buddhists constitute most of the population. However, there are several million Rohinga people who are Muslim.
Arakan was vaguely known to the Romans as Argyre (Pliny the Elder, Ptolemy) or Khruse (Periplus of the Erythraean Sea), which they only knew was somewhere near India.
