The Chinese Telephone Code Plan is the way to group telephone numbers in mainland China. Typically a "0" is added in front when dialing from within mainland China, but is never added when dialing from outside mainland China. Domestic phone numbers in large cities have 8 digits, and in other areas 7 digits and no less. In mainland China, mobile phone numbers start with 13 and usually have 11 digits. Hong Kong and Macao are not part of this numbering plan, and use the country codes 852 and 853 respectively.

The Republic of China on Taiwan currently uses the international calling code of 886 while mainland China uses 86; if Taiwan switched to the telephone numbering plan of mainland China, then its international calling code would be 86-6, one digit away from its current caling code. This is why Area 6 is reserved for Taiwan.
