Arnprior, Ontario - Definition |
Arnprior is a town in eastern Renfrew County, in eastern Ontario, Canada at the mouth of the Madawaska River, as it enters the Ottawa River. As of the 2001 census, it had a population of 7,192 people. Since September 2004, Arnprior has been the terminus of Highway 417, where it becomes the two-lane Highway 17, although that distinction may be short-lived; many expect that future construction will extend the 417 well past Arnprior in the next few years.
History
The area was first settled by the Scottish Archibald McNab who named the area after his family's ancestral home of Arnprior, Scotland. After becoming reknowed for the despotic way he treated those on his land he was forced to vacate the area in 1840 and the area was vacant until 1851 when it became incorporated into eastern Ontario's massive timber industry. Arnprior was incorporated as a village in 1862. Thirty years later (in 1892), it was incorporated as a town. It occupies a beautiful spot at the confluence of the Madawaska and Ottawa rivers.
