Artek (camp) - Definition and Overview

Artek (Russian: Арте́к) was the All-Union and international Young Pioneer camp in the Soviet Union. It was established on June 16 1925 near the Black Sea in Gurzuf town which is located on Crimea peninsula. First the camp was intended for 80 children. But it grew rapidly. In 1969 it had an area of 3.2 km², there were 150 buildings, 3 medical buildings, a school, film studio Artekfilm, 3 swimming-pools, sports stadium (7000 places), playgrounds and others.

In that time in Artek had a rest 27 thousand children a year. Between 1925 and 1969 in the camp had a rest 300 thousand of children including more than 13 thousand children from 70 foreign countries. After the breaking up of the Young Pioneer organization of the Soviet Union in 1990 it became much less popular, although many children still have the ability to rest there.
