Asahikawa, Hokkaido - Definition and Overview

Asahikawa, or Asahigawa (旭川市; -shi) is a city located in Kamikawa, Hokkaido, Japan.

As of 2003, the city has an estimated population of 357,927 and the density of 478.77 persons per km². The total area is 747.60 km².

The city was founded on August 1, 1922. The Asahikawa Airport is located in Asahikawa.

The city is headquatered by the second division of the northern army of Japan Gorund Self-Defense Forces.
